Re: Reveal 14 Live!

Well, unfortunately for my wallet, Spyderco has been listening to requests on the forums.... That profile set is an instant buy from me; they even included the hook sharpener for fishermen. I might even have to gift that set to some family members. I can't say no to the catcherman or the cruwear mil...

Re: Batoning Enuff 2?

I regularly baton corner pieces off of firewood at campsites to make some kindling with an m390 bradford guardian. If it's the geometry that cuts, it's also the geometry that determines deformation (whether chipping or rolling). M390 is not a tough steel but is sufficient for my tasks. With any stee...

Re: S30V, S45VN or S90V. Is one of these better?

If going stainless, I will almost always choose s90v over the other two -- but I use diamond sharpening stones. The stainless properties of s90v and s30v are roughly the same, but the s90v holds a working edge noticeably longer. I prefer s45vn to s30v, but only because s45vn is significantly more st...

Re: Para 3 - anyone else wish the blade stock was thinner?

I'm pretty happy with the thickness of my para3 -- but I mainly use it for carving and the thicker blade stock puts less pressure on my thumb. Have you tried a sage? I think the two knives are very similar with the sage having the thinner blade stock.

Re: S110V sharpening tips

I suggest diamond stones to remove metal quickly and to leave a toothy edge. I polished the edge once but it did not last long. I go free-hand with a spyderco CBN, then to a DMT-medium, then to a spyderco fine or extra fine and finally a leather strop with 0.5 um compound. The large jump from a DMT-...

Re: SALT Shaman, Thoughts?

But this is the point I am trying to get across. Based on my testing/borderline-abuse with the magnacut mule-teams, Magnacut is basically a stainless Cruwear. Magnacut hasn't stropped back as nicely as Cruwear, but edge retention and toughness is essentially the same between my two mules. I haven't...

Re: SALT Shaman, Thoughts?

It's interesting that you rule out Magnacut but qualify Cruwear. From my own experience testing z-wear, pd1, and magnacut mules, I found them all very similar -- so much so that I would not be able to distinguish them in use. This is likely because the carbide volume is so similar between magnacut ...

Re: SALT Shaman, Thoughts?

No thanks. The Shaman is one of the beefier heavier use folders that Spyderco makes, so imo it needs a really tough blade with exceptional edge holding. None of the salt blade steels really qualify, including Magnacut. Cruwear and similar performing steels are ideal for this format folder imo. It's...

Re: “Best” steels video with Larrin

Enjoy the video. Only I cant agree that S30V and M390 are in the same category. M390 have much better edge retention in my use than S30V.Tried both in mulptile knives with same results. So M390 as a high edge retention steel. Lc200N is my favourite balance steel. Edge retention better than VG10/ S3...

Re: Corrosion Reports

Similar results on a 15V manix. After wiping (but not oiling) the blade before putting away for a week, I came back to tiny red rusts spots peppering the blade. My k390 tends to form black oxide spots -- not red rust. It cleaned up easily with bar keepers friend, but I'll have to be more careful in ...

Re: KnifeJoy Manix 2 Disappointment

I believe the image white balance was incorrect and displayed a brighter color due to the saturated image. I came to this conclusion after seeing other images of the para 3. I was hoping for a florescent green rather than a lime green. If I'm going to buy a bright knife, might as well go all out. I'...

Very cool! For some reason, I always associate Celtic history with Ireland, Scotland, etc. I forget they also resided over a significant portion of Europe. Sounded like a splendid day. Thanks for sharing the photo.

Re: Get me excited about M398

My wife and I have been using the M398 mule in the kitchen exclusively for the past few weeks (or months at this point?). The edge has dulled but not in the traditional way one would expect. While the edge is no longer shaving sharp, it actually became far more aggressive with use. Under a 10x loupe...

Re: Advice Needed on Shaman CPM 15V Edge Damage

That's not bad damage. It looks as if it may have been dropped tip down. I'm also impressed that it rolled given the hardness of the steel. It'll eventually disappear with sharpening and stropping. I accidentally dropped a maxamet para 3 the other day and lost the edge near the very tip, but it will...

Re: CPM Cruwear chipping?

Agreed. I think coolant can only pull heat away so quickly. And we're talking just a few micrometers at the very edge. All things considered, I'm rather impressed. Imagine how damaged the edge would be if coolant wasn't used.

Re: We don't actually need to Magnacut *all* the knives

Just my 2 cents, but I think it's important that people not look at these graphs (whether rope test or CATRA) and walk away with a single expected value for something like edge retention. In reality, that single value is more representative of a distribution's mean. I think DunninLA was pointing out...

Sounds like you need a Caribbean, and if they do them in MagnaCut I'm buying several.
Good point! I had forgotten about that model. I've yet to do a side by side comparison between lc200n and magnacut, but I suspect I'd prefer the higher hardness steel in the end; i.e. magnacut.

Re: We don't actually need to Magnacut *all* the knives

The only thing that keeps me from taking a g10 anything fishing (in either fresh or saltwater where I know I'll be wading) or biking is the stop pin and/or liners. They tend to corrode as easily as s30v. At least, that was my experience a few years ago. I'd be curious to hear if this has changed. A ...

Guessing it's a LC200N lit' native. Not sure though

Re: Lightweight Native 5

I oiled a native lightweight salt once. After about a week, it had the worst gritty action. I cleaned the oil out and haven't had any problems since. That was 3 years ago. I'm curious about the graphite approach. However, I'd worry about the graphite turning to mud once it gets wet and potentially p...
