Re: Small Folders Okay Gor Self Defense?

I believe that all of California has ridiculous CCW processes where nothing qualifies as "justifiable cause " for a CCW, so it's a defacto ban on CCWs. Here is the actual law: http://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/codes_displaySection.xhtml?lawCode=PEN§ionNum=26150 California_CCW_Issuance_Map...

Re: Small Folders Okay Gor Self Defense?

I have no real martial arts training and even less edged weapons training. For me, what self defense knife would be recommended, and why? Hey, K1. I worked in DTLA until a couple months ago. My time there was the best of my career, and my travels through the streets were indeed eye-opening. Luckily...

Re: Mr. Clean Magic Eraser sheets

Buying brandless magic erasers is the way to go... So much cheaper Right on. When I first read about these "Magic Erasers," I was incredulous and totally opposed to paying the going rate. Then I started looking around, and found that I could get the no-name brand for cheap. I still have a giant box...

Re: Lower Back Pain

That's cool that you've found people to put you on the right path.

It's interesting that we're all made of meat and bones, we all get goofed up sometimes, but only the lucky ones find someone who has the wisdom to help us get back to normal.

Re: spray painting liners?

Duracote is a two-part alternative to Ceracote, and it doesn't need to be baked. I've only used it on one rifle, but it looks as good as the day I sprayed it.

Another option is plating. Caswell Plating has solutions to about any plating problem you can come up with.

Re: Do we do people disservice?

Any thoughts? Do we do a disservice to others with recommending knives that are beyond the ability or desire of others to sharpen? Would it be better to recommend something easier and then if they are interested they can move up? I had all my thoughts typed out, but the act of typing made me reflec...

Now there is just no way I would ever pull one out in a restaurant, and that is NEVER. That's really pushing ones luck depending on the location etc. Pushing one's luck? Call me an unsophisticated lout oblivious to social norms, but I've never had a problem whipping out my knife. My luck has always...

Re: Interesting discussion on a bleeding blade

The fact that it happend with a carbon blade was (imho) that when you apply oil onto a steel, like carbon steel, that will rust, you can remove the ultra thin layer of rust (black oxidation) and mix it with the oil. This forms a little black sludge that is scraped of in the first inches due to the ...

Re: Why don't they chrome plate carbon steel?

Mrs. Iron just brought home a box full of parts that she had chromed for the old Coca-Cola Machine she's restoring. They also did all the chrome on her old Mustang, and some trim parts on our old truck. The shop is about two miles from here. Doing chrome isn't easy. The surface has to be polished pe...

Fun! I'm way OT here so I'll keep it short: No stove collection is complete without a Zelph Starlyte... Had to google it--the Starlyte looks kinda neat. For a while I experimented with penny stoves. Mostly it was for my own amusement. The penny stove is really just a chopped up aluminum can that us...

I pressed a couple of bushels of apples myself last fall seeds and all and I am still here to tell the story. :) Squeezin' apples is a periodic event here at the Casa de Doghair. Besides loading up the outdoor freezer and sending a couple jugs home with everyone who attends, ten gallons is reserved...

Re: Wood for scales

Thanks guys. I think worst case I make them, they look horrible, don’t last and then I take them off. I'm not a woodworker, but sometimes I make stuff out of wood. More than once I've had well-aged wood change shape after the project is complete. Most recently, it was a Mule, where I made the scale...

Am I the only adult left in the world who just eats an apple whole, without cutting it up first? I feel so alone... Yeah, you're a weirdo, all right. But only mid-level. If you want to kick out your weirdness to the next level, don't eat your apple in the traditional orientation. Start eating at th...

Does such a thing as flat sheets of 1/8 or 1/4" FRN or FRCP or other similar lighweight material exist? Sure... with the caveat that we don't really know exactly what Spyderco's FRN and FRCP are. It's as if I told you my truck had steel connecting rods and aluminum pistons. You'll know a little bit...

Re: Buying habits that harm small businesses

When people buy knives with the intention of returning them it puts a financial strain on the business Financial strain aside, it's just plain dishonest. I'm tempted to say what I think about intentionally dishonest behavior, but I know the Spyderco Forum's mantra is something about walking barefoo...

Re: About that food prep ...

I can absolutely understand the joy of making a quick breakfast or slice a stake with one's favourite pocket knife, but when I see people portioning a large piece of meat or dicing onions with a pocket knife while having actual kitchen knives at arm's length - I can not help but wonder why would th...

Re: Serrated Edge Retention

No one ever mentions the difference in the angle between a plain edge and a serrated edge. I don't know the numbers, but I'm gonna bet it's a factor worthy of consideration.
