Re: Community Sharpening Journal

It's only 3/4 of the way done and kicking my butt. Hey, Josh. It seems to me that Maxamet likes to chip when I try to removed material too quickly, either through the use of excessively coarse stones, or through the use of some cheap stones because I don't want to use my good ones for that purpose....

Re: Thorough - Multi-Tool Face Off

I have one of the same type of Gerber multi-tool you described. (It’s the old USA-made version that has flick-out/locking pliers, but the implements are all slip-joint). Yup, that's the one! The funny thing is, I started off with just one of these. Eventually the jaw of the pliers broke. That's rig...

Re: Thorough - Multi-Tool Face Off

I've only had two top-shelf multitools. Both are Gerber. Both have blunt-nose pliers. Both pliers were the sliding-type that could be deployed with one hand and a flick of the wrist. The multitools with the pliers that require the floppy-floppy antics of a Butterfly Knife Assassin do not interest me...

Re: Should Zome be Discontinued?

From what I have observed, I get a sense that it really hinders sales of exclusives that feature Zome. I don't really have the data to know how Zome finishes affect sales, and it's not really any of my business. However, I can assure you that you'll never see me carrying a Zome knife. They remind m...

Re: Spyderco Reveal Update

Cool. I think your new system will be better for all. Personally, I'm somewhat of an impulse buyer. I'm compelled to reach for the shiny new baubles. If there is a substantial delay between a reveal and actual release, my enthusiasm can wane. With that said, I can hardly wait to see what's next.

Re: Different serration sizes

police 4 size blade with manbug size serrations. Is there any disadvantage to this? Try to think of it as a hacksaw blade or a wood saw blade, which are not unlike a serrated pocket knife blade. On some materials, a coarse blade will provide the quickest and smoothest finish. On other materials, a ...

Re: Did Spyderco stop sending out their physical catalogs?

A hardcopy catalog would be SUPER if I was a time traveler going back to 1984 to buy a Spyderco Worker. Alas, this is 2021. As a prisoner of the time-space continuum, the only use I can find for paper catalogs is for lining birdcages and starting campfires. The cost of printing, postage, and labor ...

Re: Problems with k390 Spyderco knives

I reject the premise that there is something inherently wrong with Spyderco's K390 blades.

I've had several, and they've been no different than other Spyderco blades that I've had. For my plain edge K390 blades, I couldn't be happier.

Re: What did you use your Spyderco for last?

As bourgeois as it may seem, I often use my Spyderco to cut sushi into more manageable bite-size pieces. My Native 5 REX45 was pressed into use for this task. Sorry, but the knife wasn't in the picture. I normally don't photograph things before I stick 'em in my mouth, but the sunlight playing upon ...

Re: what's in your cd player now?

"CD player?" What's that? Is it anything like an "8 Track?" Do you want to learn a really cool science experiment that you can do with an old CD? You take a CD and set it shiny-side-up on top of an empty coffee cup in the microwave. The coffee cup is just a pedestal to get the CD...

Re: Thick vs Thin handles

Some of my Spydies feel thinner in my pocket than others, and some feel better in my hand, so I picked up the caliper and decided to find out what's what. Surprisingly, the Manix 2, Manix 2 XL, Endura, Native 5, and PM2 are all about the same thickness: 0.450" +/- about 0.015". I like all ...

it's still not the best choice for practical, legally justifiable self-defense. Thanks, Mike, for the clarification. Despite the appeal of shiny trinkets, I've never acquired any knuckles. I couldn't see how one could substantially add to what I might bring to the table, but I could envision the do...

Re: Community Sharpening Journal

The edge on my Endura K390 was getting a little shabby, so it was time to touch it up. I never really know what kind of edge I'm going to put on a blade when I start. I just keep going until I'm done. Some days that might be at 80 grit, and some days I go finer. Yesterday I kept progressing through ...

Re: Difficult Knife Restoration -- Thoughts?

Thanks kids. Things like this are aways a compromise. Skill and time limit how perfect the finished product can be, but you don't want it to turn out looking like a monkey took it to a bench grinder. I found a happy medium. I wouldn't compare it to what many of you can create, but I think it's a goo...
