Re: Which Byrds are BD1N?

Hi Deckeda, the Chinese Yuan is 6 to 1 to the US dollar. The cost of making a byrd in the us would cost 6 times as much as in China. No longer a budget knife at that price. sal Yes I understand that aspect. What I didn't realize was that China can't get the newer steel competitively. When I'd read ...

Re: Which strop compound(s)?

I have zero experience with any of this, which is why I started this thread. I'm hoping to mostly skip talk about sharpening here and focus on stropping. I read that stropping a lightly used sharp knife can bring it back to about 90-95% sharpness, and then later 90-95% of that, and so on until it ev...

Re: Shipping of internal parts

Thanks Mike. I realize it's not like just flipping a switch. With any endeavor that seems initially untenable, slicing off small chunks helps. So I suppose that's the purpose of this thread, then.

Updates and milestones to any project are also important. Has a consensus been reached?

Which strop compound(s)?

In this list I have mostly new, unused (i.e. with factory edges ... ) knives with the following steels: CTS-XHP (a new folder) Sandvik 14c28n (a new folder) 1095 carbon (new OKC "Old Hickory" kitchen knives) X50 Cr Mo 15 (Wusthof kitchen knives, but they're actually old and unsharp) Questi...

Re: Shipping of internal parts

I come from a world where it’s not unusual to buy auto parts, things to fix my house ... I even replace the iPhone battery and replace hard disk cables in laptops, for example. WE all live in a world where iFixit and YouTube do a fine job of assisting those willing to turn a screwdriver. And the man...

Re: Which Byrds are BD1N?

It would be interesting if byrd production could come here, on the “wings” of already-available-here BDN1. That would instantly turn the budget knife market on its head.

Re: 1095 Carbon Steel question.

I don’t have any sand or rocks in my kitchen, for my Ontario Knife Co. “Old Hickory” kitchen knives. Got a recommendation there? Like sandpaper, then knife oil to protect the blade? Thanks.

Re: Massdrop Ferrum Forge Gent?

This was my #1 pick for awhile, but the more I thought about it the more I wanted a Chapparal FRN instead. I realize they don’t directly compete with each other design-wise, but I could get only one knife at this kind of money. Maybe next year, if it’s not completely sold out by then. WE has another...

Re: What was your first Spyderco?

A Chapparal FRN arrived today. It’s the first pocketknife I ever bought. I did not know how I’d be using it, so I wanted one unobtrusive but competent. I barely know it’s in my pocket, so the first test passed! My boy is getting a less expensive knife as a gift for Xmas but that one’s very different...
