Re: Steel Properties that Knife Companies Care about and Users Don’t

We have definitely understood heat treating from well before the internet. But we knew a lot more in 1910 than 1900, and a lot more in 1920 than 1910. Discoveries come more slowly as time advances. Most common tool steels existed by 1940. What I really meant is a person like myself can go out and b...

Re: Steel Properties that Knife Companies Care about and Users Don’t

This article made me think how it's kinda weird how the science behind hardening has been guess work for such a long time. And it's not until the advent of the internet that people are learning how to do it accurately. https://archive.org/details/modernmethodsinh00hood/page/28/mode/2up For example t...

“Judo Jymnastics” I find these old self-defense demo films to be highly entertaining. I can imagine Mary Parker saying, “Come on, Big Boy, show me what you’ve got,” in a Mae West voice. https://youtu.be/SbFtFaNkXCc Jim I really enjoyed watching this video. My Father actually met my Mother in one of...

I was actually a watchmaker until my motorcycle accident. So I've seen inside of just about every type of watch imaginable. I remember back in the 90's my friend got one of the first Citizen Eco Drives in approx 1996 while in vacation down in America. At the time it cost his Father about $2000 US d...

Eventually they were sold to Citizen in 1979. Bulova was sold to the Loews Corporation in 1979. Loews Corporation sold it to Citizen Holdings Corporation in 2008. I really like Bulova's Precisionist line. I really like the 96B175. Overall I love the history of different companies and how they have ...

Hey I got a question to ask all you guys/gals who know your watches. My parents were two of the most tight-wadded, stingy, bargain basement people I ever knew in my life. They would drive you nuts with their "FIND THE CHEAPEST" philosophy pertaining to almost anything>> except watches. Bo...

Re: Martial Arts Experiences Discussion Thread

I can't help but think where you live is going to effect your Martial Arts ability. My Father used to teach Judo and Ju-Jitsu in England back in the 1960's. Growing up by the docks back in the 40's and 50's in England you had to be pretty tough and street smart as there was a lot of gangs. He starte...

When I was a kid in the 80's all the Farmers, Police, Mechanics and anyone who seemed important had a 110 on their belt. But then it seemed like they all disappeared. And you saw people with either SAKS or some kinda junk flea market knife. I think the next time I remember seeing one was when I was ...

Re: Apparently - Cold Steel Has Been Bought

Cold Steel was everything I hated about knives as I thought they were too over the top and ridiculously huge. But then I bought a used Spartan for cheap thinking to use it for trading. Well I absolutely fell in love with it! I didn't realize that there was such a huge hole in my collecting that need...

A documentary from a CCTV (China Central Television) show called Experience Real Kung Fu. The art featured in this episode is known as Pigua Quan (Splitting and Hanging Fist), or Pigua Zhang (Splitting and Hanging Palm). Pigua is not widely-known in the West. The featured ‘foreign guest’ is a Russi...

I call participation trophy's "Communism Trophy's" because that is what they are actually teaching the kids. It's the whole everyone contributes what they can and everyone shares the same reward. It's not about disappointing kids at all.

Re: Can we (civilly) discuss fixed blade prices?

The Junction (discontinued) is a peculiar knife given that it is just two flat slabs of G10 on a knife blank with two big rivets swaged on. The handle is hardly a complex piece of machining (nor is it particularly ergonomic). Nonetheless, I like the knife for its simplicity. Yet it is/was $310 MSRP...

Re: Question on another brand's heat treat and such

I'm looking at purchasing a BRK this Christmas for myself. I had the opportunity to handle my friends this summer and it blew my mind. Did some hacking into a old dead tree full force, and had no problems with it keeping it's edge. If you look at the data sheet of 3v from Crucible https://www.crucib...

Re: Anime

As a kid in the 80's the first Anime I watched was "Robotech" which was on super super early on Saturday mornings. It blew my kid mind seeing actual characters get killed etc. It was just so grown up that it made it feel that much more real. Suddenly other shows like GI Joe seemed so point...

Re: What is it that sets a good knife apart from a great one?

People can say that the material doesn't matter. But some of the best knives ergonomically wise for me that also looked great...Were ruined by 8cr13mov blades. I tried keeping them around but deep down I've raised the standard of my needs and I've become a little bit of a steel snob. I'm not so far ...

Re: Can we (civilly) discuss fixed blade prices?

I guess it was inevitable that everyone starts comparing other brands but that was not at all my point. I was looking specifically at the comparison with Spyderco's folders and the price difference between the two. Anyway, informative thread. I'm pretty sure I got my answer. I know I was hyping up ...

Re: The Perils of HIGH TECH Addiction

I work in a employment office where we help young people find jobs. I've come across a group of "Gamers" that are so addicted that they rather work minimum hours and live in poverty so they have enough time for their games. But even myself I hate to admit it but I'm 40 and a little too add...
