Re: Affordable Alternatives to 8CR13MOV

If I remeber correctly, previously Sal advised that chinese factories work with only certain steels. This is why you will not get upgraded steels (i.e. BD1N, with which steel some factories already started working with) for a specific model in the lineup (this particulary adresses to byrd knives). ...

Re: Affordable Alternatives to 8CR13MOV

IIRC Sal said going from 8Cr to BD1 means a 30% price increase. I'd imagine 14C28N to be in a similar ballpark. The company ( Ruike Knives) that made the knife I tested sells their 14C28N steel knives for a cheaper price than the Efficient, and given the performance I got out of the test knife in m...

Affordable Alternatives to 8CR13MOV

I'm gonna leave a link to my video testing of 14C28N steel. given the performance of 14C28N steel, I think that Spyderco should consider this steel as a better alternative to 8CR13MOV steel for models such as the Efficient, Insistent, Emphasis and other models currently using 8CR13MOV. Here's the li...

Re: New to the knife scene

If you really want the knife, and people can vouche for the seller, then just go for it. There's alot of knife collectors that have their knives sitting in a drawer, box, or safe that almost never see the light of day let alone see any use because of its value. But there are still quite a few out th...

Check out this video from BamaKnifeGuy heres the link

He shows how he repaired a socom elite with major damage. If your tip damage is as small as I think, you definitely dont need to waste money on another blade. Good luck.

Re: Sal the Micarta Man - Shaman flavors poll

I submitted k390 and other. I figure, if you like a knife that much, get it in your favourite steel and look to the custom market for specific scales. Or even, dare I say, get some equipment and try your hand at making your own custom scales

Re: The low grit sharpening thread

I'm already aware of that info and that didn't address my question. I probably didn't word it correctly. Nothing actually wrong with it. In fact, it is literally dependant on use. I have taken s90v to 3 different stages of sharpening and have found this out: on ultra fine grit( mirror polish), for ...

Re: The low grit sharpening thread

What exactly is wrong with smoothing out carbides? While I'm largely a coarse grit sharpener, the grit finish you want according to the task you plan on accomplishing while taking the hardness of the matrix into account should far supersede this in my opinion. Steels like S90V for example is jam pa...

Thanks. I don’t have any direct experience with Elmax. I had the impression it would be far better than S30V. Good video.
Yup. 15% better than S30V, slightly more difficult to sharpen than S30V.

That was great, thanks, might have to get me some 28 micron paste now.
That was my first time using 28 micron paste on leather. I may test in on wood strops once I get some wood to see if it reacts differently.

S30V vs ELMAX Cut Test

If your a fan of zknives.com's knife steel app, compare these two to see that Elmax kind of a slightly more ramped up version of S30V. Having these two knives allowed me to conduct this testing sharpening them with only a spyderco sharpmaker diamond rod and both are stropped with a 28 micron loaded ...

Re: The low grit sharpening thread

The clean, highly refined, fine edge of a straight razor certainly has a lot to do with having a smooth shave, but you're also making the knife sharper as well. I can whittle hairs off my 325 grit DMT and shave like nothing, but no matter how good of a job I do, I will not be able to outdo the edge...

I would be down for one. I have yet to experience super blue steel so it would be nice to get super blue back in the folder mix for those of us wanting to get their hands on the steel

Re: The low grit sharpening thread

I've been sharpening knives for about 30 years. Most that time I took my edges to a high polish, generally finishing with highest grit I had available to me. I'd finish my edges with a Spyderco ultrafine benchstone or sharpmaker rods, then strop. Reading about sharpening on different knife forums c...

Re: What's good about S30V

For us experienced sharpeners, s30v is easy to sharpen. But the fact of the matter is, s30v is not really a forgiving steel for sharpeners less experienced. There are ways to sharpen it where it has long working edge potential and lesser sharpening levels that get people saying they would rather sti...

Re: S30V, VG-10; But If I Had A Choice???

The one that stood out to me the most would have to be the brouwer model. It has the kind of ergonmics that really shined. I dint skip it out of dislike for s30v. I'm primarilly into spydercos to try out new steels that I never had the pleasure of using and sharpening, so I tend to avoid getting mod...

Re: Shaman Cru-Wear Sprint Run release ?

While I agree with all who said cruwear should be a production steel, I kind of think of a time when s110v and maxamet was limited. Maybe spyderco heard enough people suggesting to make those production steels. Now you can get both steels easily as they are not flying off the shelves. Some models in...

Nice video! That was a good amount of cardboard. Much thinner grind on that Delica than a Shaman, would be cool to see a comparison. Also...it freaks me out with you cutting towards yourself! I know cutting toward one self is not an ideal method, but for some reason, it works better for me when doi...
