we're running it pretty hard, 67-68 as I remember. There isn't much real-world testing or history using it as a knife blade. I guess is all you :p

Time to learn.

I thought ZT did a Maxamet blade- haven't seen any comments about it.

That's right. I forgot about the 0888 starting out with Maxamet. It had a DLC coating that looked pretty cool. I think they made something like 125 and switched to M390 for the rest of the run if I recall. I think it was issues with hardening that prompted the change of materials too. :o
My guess is Spyderco will do a much better job with the HT process. I can't wait to find out! :)

Thanks Sal. I've been waiting to try a steel like this. We'll see if it can handle an ultra thin edge.

Excuse my ignorance but is this looking like being a pimped up S110V / S125V type steel with large carbides planned to cut and cut. Or are there to many unknowns at this stage.

Maxamet isn't stainless and it's made to keep its extreme hardness at high temperatures.

If you look up the steel on Google, you can find info from Carpenter explaining what it was developed for. As Bodog pointed out, extreme hardness at high temperatures pretty much covers it. It is not nearly as tough as M4, but has more wear resistance. S125V had some intention of being corrosion resistant, I don't think that's the case here. I haven't seen much information regarding how susceptible to corrosion Maxamet will be. My guess would be similar to M4 in that respect. Overall, I expect better edge retention than S125, more susceptible to corrosion, and similar toughness. It was not designed for knives, so the unknown is that there's limited testing using it for that purpose.

$155 is still cheap for a Maxamet blade. If you can get handles and a sheath for another $50 then you'll have $205 total into the knife. Considering buying something comparable from someone who's willing to work with something like Maxamet (if you can find those makers in the first place) would likely cost $300 or more, I'd say it's a good price if you want to try a really high hardness, highly wear resistant steel even if it costs you a little more than in the US

I say that shipping is expensive. I have all the mules Spyderco. This I will buy. But the delivery is very expensive! It would be cheaper to bring Ebay.
My mules.
