What I do is to use a rounded and tapered metal dowel slightly larger than the tube inner diameter and then tap that gently (somewhat) on whatever side of the tube I want to separate from the handle. It's best to keep that "into knives" thing under wraps until it's serious and then bring it up slowly. Don't just break out a box of knives and machetes as that might not go over to well.

It looks like the back lock mafia has been paying bribes and using witness intimidation.
