Re: Micromelt PD#1

I'm going to add this only because it's such a critical point... I’m glad you added all that to say exactly what I said: they’re basically indistinguishable. 😉 I also really liked this KnifeCenter pic (their pic of course) of all of these new PD#1 offerings in one shot: https://i.imgur.com/3jk9462....

Re: Micromelt PD#1

It’s certainly very close. Micro-melt PD#1 has a titch more chromium and some manganese in it. I’m guessing they’d be nearly indistinguishable (assuming similar heat treats) but I’m sure Larrin can chime in. https://i.imgur.com/yTHXcfw.jpg I'm going to add this only because it's such a critical poi...

This is what I'd recommend buying from Lee Valley with some loose abrasive if you go that route. It may help to know what make/model of stones you are planning to flatten also. Waterstones, oilstones, Spyderco ceramics, etc... https://www.leevalley.com/en-us/shop/tools/sharpening/100086-glass-lappi...

Re: Visualizing the Tradeoff of Higher Hardness

I’d much rather have toughness than edge retention personally. A rolled edge is annoying but easier for a beginner sharpener to fix than a chip It's not only easier for a beginner to fix a roll than a chip, this is true in almost all cases. In general, if you don't mind using very heavy duty edge g...

Re: Community Sharpening Journal

Is there anyone here smarter than I am who can explain how this could possibly work: https://youtu.be/dTyeLn7kt08 I get how it could work on a knife with axe-like geometry (like the ER he demonstrates it on), but Im not seeing how it could work on a knife meant to function like a knife. It does loo...

You're wasting your time. He's blaming Taichung's oil so it won't be his fault that he rusted his carbon steel knife using stainless steel cleaner.
Perhaps, in general it's really impossible to know a person's motives for posting these sorts of things.

Re: T15 tarnish

To me the patina and scratches are just part of the journey that a knife takes. It tells a story that can be seen at a glance. I never liked carbon steel before I got involved with the Spyderco mules but I’ve come to prefer it because I can’t wait to see the next gradual change in the color of the ...

Jason ^^^^^^ is the best I've ever seen at sharpening a knife. And, I'm talkin Free Hand! He's sharpened several for me & they've all cut and sliced better than anything I could ever turn out. The man has an amazing talent. Send him a knife or 3 and see..... I think you have me mistaken, I'm no...

This video explains the basic process in simple way, start here... Would you say that plateau sharpening is harder than raising a burr? I feel like a burr is definitive proof that you have reached the apex--or gone too far according to some. I like the feedback, even though it is wasteful. I really...

What is plateau sharpening? Just alternating sides? How can you tell that you’ve apexed the edge?

Re: Community Sharpening Journal

Not to be annoying: but how large of a burr do you need? I saw some YouTube videos where the burr is so big they can break it off with their fingers. Mine never gets that large, no matter how much I sharpen on one side I don't need a burr at all to get a knife sharp, technically nobody else does ei...

Spyderco Fine https://i.imgur.com/YRrbKa1.jpeg Spyderco Ultra Fine https://i.imgur.com/Yur3HJN.jpeg I thought this was very interesting, The difference in abrasive size is basically the same. Re: You got your Ceramic Mule. How you gonna sharpen it?

If shaving hair is difficult or impossible for most sharpeners with this material, it suggests that the material is not capable of getting to a thin enough cross section at the apex. This can happen with steel by formation of a burr but in this case I wouldn't expect much burr formation. I would sug...

Albeit, this was asked for when "super steels" were the only steel that seemed to matter to the market. I'm glad this is not the case anymore. I would be up for a White #1 MULE.
This is not the case anymore? It seems to be the main focus here, from what I have seen.

I sure miss Cliff. He pops up in my RAM pretty often. I sure learned lot from Cliff. I'll watch the thread to see if there is enough interest for a Mule Team. Once you get past the "better" concept, All blade steels have their own flavor. That's why I've said, "No best, all good, jus...

Re: Hitachi White Steel

I'm a big fan of it for kitchen knives. I'll have to post a photo of my favorite petty and show off how thin it is behind the edge. Very, very thin. I'd be interested in a mule in white #1. I'm curious how it'd hold up carving wood and performing other camp tasks. It gets very sharp really easily. ...
